Legend of Zelda is growing up. Hyrule has joined the likes of Tamriel and Nilfgaard and is now a free roaming country. Not since Ocarina of Time have the mechanics changed so drastically.  And just in time.  Skyward Sword was a failure to many and received a very lukewarm reception.  (It was in fact the first LOZ I couldn’t bother to finish.) The re-release of Windwaker received better reviews and saw more excitement from the players.  Fans have been aching for something new and today we received a taste of what is to come in 2017. Nintendo Treehouse entertainingly treated us to nearly 8 hours of gameplay which according to them was just 1% of what the game has in store for us.  Here are some things we have learned at today’s demonstration:

  • For the first time ever, Link can sprint, climb anything and jump.
  • Enemies and NPC’s behave differently depending on the time of day.
  • Sneaking is a thing.  A meter on the screen tells you how loud you’re being.
  • Bodies are lootable. Enemy weapons can be equipped.
  • Each melee weapon responds differently.
  • Link is susceptible to the cold.  The night gets cold.
  • You can sleep in random beds.
  • There are ingredients scattered throughout the lands to create by trial and error meals which will give you buffs.
  • There are no more hearts. Food fills your health. Crafted meals can give you extra hearts for a short amount of time.
  • You can see how strong an enemy is from afar. Giving the opportunity to avoid an area.
  • There are classic dungeons and 100 + mini dungeons called Shrines.
  • New combat mechanics have what seems to be finishing moves with slow motion.
  • Three new Amiibos were revealed.
  • The Wolf Link Amiibo from Twilight Princess HD is a once a day usable pet.
  • You can Legolas ride your shield down hills.
  • Weapons are damaged and can be thrown at enemies in a last resort move.
  • You can mark locations on the very large worlds map.

This list will be updated, as tomorrow’s conference promises to give us a more information. We have no doubts that The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild will be a breath of fresh air.
